"new" is perhaps a misnomer, but I've not posted about this one before. It's now getting to the point where I'm encountering new things, which seems a good point to mention it here just before it dies messily.

Currently, it's on score 279,280 after 2,078,608 turns. My previous character, which was quite divey (until an unfortunate interaction with an Ancient Gold Dragon). At a similar point, that was on score 215,150 after 2,273,664, which I think means I'm gettinb better :-)

That's that, then. The diving strategy (5 levels lower than anyone else on the table) was, I think, working, but obviously more care should be taken with Ds whose breath attack I don't resist. Maybe the next character will get better luck with kit, too!

I've just surpassed the score of my most recently deceased character, putting me at third-place on the score-board. That character died on score 215,017 after 2,671,003 turns; this character is on score 215,150 after 2,273,664, which is a noticable difference.

I've noticed that angband character dumps don't include the turn number. That irritates me.

This character is diving even faster than the last one (who was at dlvl 4 when lvl 11, and dlvl 9 when level 15) - this is the third trip into the dungeon (first was levels 1 and 2, then 1-5, now 5-8); I've had to run away from Wormtongue a couple of times, and Smeagol was being enough of a pain that I eventually killed him. Some sort of teleport other capability is going to be a real asset soon, as will Free Action.

This is after the first trip down; I would have gone to dlvl 3, but my inventory was full of Stuff. The weapon was dropped by Farmer Maggot; I've also killed Fang. This time I thought a bit about the stats other than STR and INT, which seems to be helping a bit.

I set off a monster-summoning trap due to mis-remembering whether I'd done find traps and doors (it looked like a bit of map I'd been close to before), which is a silly mistake. It summoned a yMHD, mind flayer, vampire, and dark elven priest. In the first round, I got strength-drained (slowing me, so they all got a second shot), int-drained (twice), mind blasted, and blinded, which meant none of my escape plans would work. the !CCW was about the only option, but the HP were never really going to last :( So, second on the high-score table, after quite a small number of turns really.

shambling mounds + uniques == bad pain

(in this case, nothing running away and returning with acid bolts couldn't fix, but...). I should do YACD at some point.

I just cleared out a reasonable-sized vault (filled a little less than a whole screen). You'll notice I got my stats shuffled by a nexus hound - thankfully Int remained as it should be. The teleport-other rod got a fair amount of use, too. I now just have to decide what to do with the haul; in the majority of cases, sadly, I think this will be "sell it" - I can't wield a fair chunk of the weaponry/armour, and can't afford the weight of carrying lots of it. I figure I'll keep the heavy crossbow for the day I have more STR...

I just killed Boldor, king of the Yeeks, and shortly afterwards found a potion of experience, which levelled me twice. A definite plus :)
I surpassed a previous character of mine (5th on the score-chart) on turn 1421083 (it died on turn 1512431), so my "aggressive" play has only saved me 6% of my turns.

How deep can I sensibly go without rBasic covered?

I thought I was diving faster with this character (and indeed, I'm aware of the game being quite tough at the moment), but looking at the high-score table, there's a 22nd level H-E Mage killed by an Uruk on dlv 14 with score 18602 after 1512431 turns; my character is on score 17483 after 1381949 turns.

I guess the boots of stability will come in handy once nexus-breathers start turning up. Otherwise, I could use a bit of armour of resistance; ISTR I shouldn't be going much deeper without the basic resistances catered for...
